Read to the Rescues: Summer Reading Program

Overview:  Read to the Rescues is a transformative literacy and equine engagement program serving over 500 students annually. Founded by Educators for Unbridled, this volunteer-run initiative is designed to foster the joy of reading, enhance comprehension skills, and deepen children's connections with horses.

Program Details: Participants choose books from our extensive collection or bring their own to read aloud to the horses in our Secret Forest Memorial Library. Children read for about an hour to one or more horses, who show their engagement by listening attentively and encouraging the readers. This unique interaction boosts confidence and transforms shy readers into enthusiastic storytellers.

Impact and Recognition: Parents and teachers have noted significant improvements in children's reading skills and empathy. The program's success led to an official partnership with the New York State Libraries and recognition by NY State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. To see the program in action, visit Spectrum News Feature.

Beyond Reading: Post-reading sessions include learning about the horse’s rescue story, grooming, and discussions on horse care. This hands-on approach not only teaches responsibility but also allows children to form lasting bonds with the horses, encouraging repeated visits and sustained interest.

2024 and Beyond: In collaboration with Libraries & Schools, we're expanding Read to the Rescues to include virtual story hours throughout the year!
